App Store In-App Events: Image Sizes, Examples & How to Create Them
Updated July 9, 2026 · by Adam Lyttle, indie app developer
App Store in-app events are timely promotions — launches, challenges, new seasons, major updates — that Apple shows as rich event cards on your product page, in search results, and in editorial placements across the App Store. They're free organic visibility, and most indie developers never use them because producing the artwork is a chore.
What are in-app events (and why they get you downloads)
Introduced in iOS 15, in-app events give your app extra App Store surface area beyond your listing: your event card can appear on the Today, Games and Apps tabs, in search, and in personalized recommendations — to people who haven't installed your app yet. You can have up to 15 approved events at a time, 10 live on your product page. Every big publisher (Genshin Impact, Royal Match, Pokémon TCG) runs them continuously; the placement is dramatically under-used by smaller apps, which makes it cheap attention.
In-app event image sizes (the exact requirements)
- Event card: landscape, minimum 1920×1080, maximum 3840×2160 (16:9).
- Event details page: portrait, minimum 1080×1920, maximum 2160×3840 (9:16).
- No text or logos in the artwork. Apple overlays your event name and app icon on the image in white text (bottom-left of the card) — baked-in text clashes with the overlay and looks amateur. Keep the lower third calm and dark so Apple's white text stays readable.
- No borders or gradients — the App Store applies its own crops and gradient treatments.
- Visual continuity — Apple recommends the card and details page share the same palette and style, like two crops of one world.
Event metadata limits
- Event name: 30 characters max.
- Short description (on the card): 50 characters max.
- Long description (details page): 120 characters max.
- Badge: one of Challenge, Competition, Live Event, Major Update, New Season, Premiere, or Special Event.
What actually makes a good in-app event
- Tie it to something real: a version launch ("what's new" makes a ready-made event), a seasonal moment, a challenge, new content.
- Make the artwork about the user's world, not your UI. The best event cards are cinematic key art built from the app's visual identity — not screenshot collages.
- Run them back to back. Events expire; publishers that win this placement always have the next one queued.

Make App Ads creates the complete in-app event pack from your App Store link: it pulls your app's current version and "What's New" notes to pre-fill the event idea, writes App Store Connect copy that fits Apple's exact 30/50/120-character limits (badge included), and generates both images — event card at 1920×1080 and details page at 1080×1920, text-free with the lower third kept calm for Apple's overlay, built from your app's real branding. The full pack (both images + copy) costs 20 tokens. Start free, or read how to promote your app for where events fit in the bigger picture.
Frequently asked questions
Do in-app events work for non-game apps?
Yes — any timely moment qualifies: a major update, a new feature launch, a seasonal challenge, live content. The Major Update and Special Event badges exist precisely for regular apps.
Can text appear in in-app event images?
Apple strongly advises against it: the App Store overlays your event name and app icon on the artwork automatically, so baked-in text or logos clash with the overlay and can hurt approval.
How long can an in-app event run?
An event can be published up to 14 days before it starts and can run for up to 31 days. You can have up to 15 approved events queued in App Store Connect.
